‘I can’t wait to play on something I designed’

Ava Newton and Maggie Mulcahy saw their designs take shape on Saturday after months of anticipation.

Hundreds of volunteers have worked since last Tuesday to build the new Imagination Station in Mulligan’s Hollow. More than 100 local students helped design the new play space, and Newton and Mulcahy, both 8, specifically designed the treehouse.

Last spring, Newton’s and Mulcahy’s designs received the top votes for the Imagination Station Treehouse Design Challenge. In August, the two girls worked with designers to merge their ideas into one design.

Seeing the treehouse nearly complete on Saturday, Newton, a third-grader at Griffin Elementary School, said she loved it.

Mulcahy, a third-grader at Peach Plains Elementary School, said she’s still shocked her design was selected, and she looks forward to the project being finished.

“I can’t wait to play on something that I designed, and I can’t wait to see other kids play on it too,” she said.
