Two local Veterans Day ceremonies will take place at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The Sgt. Alvin Jonker VFW Post 2326 will host a ceremony at Grand Haven’s Central Park and the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post 28 will host a separate ceremony at the Eternal Flame, which is located near the Tri-Cities Family YMCA off Harbor Drive.

The public is also invited to the VFW Post at 5 p.m. Sunday to hear essays students wrote for the post’s patriotic essay contest. The VFW Auxiliary will be serving chili.

This past summer, Grand Haven became the fifth location in the country to have both Gold Star and Blue Star markers, which honor families and military members. The Blue Star Memorial honors families of men and women serving in the armed forces and Gold Star Memorials honor families of fallen service members.

The markers, located near the Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium, were unveiled in July.

The American Legion’s Auxiliary worked with the Tri-Cities Garden Club to make the markers possible. In addition to donations from families and businesses, the auxiliary also provided financial support.

Auxiliary President Kathleen Edwards said it’s a “wonderful honor” to have the markers in Grand Haven.

“You can’t ever put into words how many veterans and families can connect to that,” she said.
