On Thursday, May 9, the Mackinaw will be available for public tours. Tours will be offered from 8-11 a.m., 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.
If you are interested in touring the cutter, the Coast Guard says you should stop by during the above tour windows and some of the crew will show you around.
The 240-foot Mackinaw is the U.S. Coast Guard's only heavy icebreaker on the Great Lakes and was designed to provide multi-mission capabilities with state-of-the-art systems. It was commissioned in June 2006 and its homeport is Cheboygan.
The original Mackinaw served the maritime community throughout the Great Lakes for more than 60 years until being decommissioned in 2006.
