Jennifer Begert had tears in her eyes as a bugler played “Taps” and she was presented with a flag in honor of her father, John C. Begert, during a memorial service Thursday at the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post 28.

Begert died May 17 at the age of 73. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, he was a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, serving during the Vietnam War. He was also retired from the Department of Corrections in Kentucky.

He was a member of the Grand Haven Eagles Aerie 925, the Knights of Columbus and the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Louisville.

Begert moved to Grand Haven several years ago and quickly became a regular at American Legion functions.

“John, we’re going to miss you,” Post Chaplain Duane Smith said. “We’re very humbled that you came up here three years ago to Grand Haven and became one of our members. Thank you very much and God bless you.”

Smith said that Begert had crossed everything off his bucket list.

“During the days leading up to his passing, I had the privilege to share some meaningful time with John, and he assured me he was ready to go home,” Smith said. “He had made his peace with God.”
