Dancing into the Sunset

FRUITPORT — Dancing along Spring Lake in Fruitport has a history going back to the Fruitport Pavilion in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.

Susie Halter said participating in the Dancing with the Local Stars gave her the idea to “pay it forward” by bringing music and dance back to the area — now at the bandshell at Fruitport’s Pomona Park.

She partnered with the Fruitport Lions, who cover insurance for the event, called Dancing into the Sunset. This is held every Thursday throughout the summer.

Some of the musicians have donated their time for the dances.

Silverado provided music at the July 5 event, which included a military salute and a special appearance by a crew from Coast Guard Station Grand Haven.

Impact Entertainment Mobile DJ Service will provide music for this week’s event — Thursday, July 12. The family-owned DJ service includes the husband, wife and two daughters. They run the dance party at Woods and Waters Campground in White Cloud on most weekends, which is where Halter said she first heard them. Halter asked them last year to help provide the music and “they did it for free all summer long.”

A free Zumba lesson/class will be held during the first hour, followed by the DJ.

Halter invites spectators to walk down to the bandshell to see the photoboard of the pavilion and the dance history including big bands that came to town, including Perry Como and Tommy Dorsey.
