Men get in the act of giving back

roup, local men are getting into the act of giving in a big way.

The initial meeting of the 100 Men (or More) Who Give is at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20.

“It’s structured right out of the 100 Women (or More) Who Care,” said Dave Palmer, one of the founders of the men’s group.

In a little more than a year, the women’s group has awarded about $146,000 to local agencies.

Palmer has stepped back from his work with the Spread the Music Foundation, the local organization that raises money for area school music programs and donates instruments to youth. The Grand Haven Township man burned down his house in April — on purpose — and has since been busy rebuilding it.

Palmer said he wrote Cindy Anderson, who is heading up the 100 Women, and asked if her group would mind if the men hop on the bandwagon. Palmer said Anderson gave her blessing and offered him assistance.

Initially, Palmer said about 10 local men formed the nucleus and crafted a plan to start the philanthropic group.

“I’m pretty sure we’ll have 100 guys at our first meeting,” he said. “When you sign up, you’re committed to give $100 each time.”

The one-hour meeting will be structured similar to the women’s group: Three local nonprofit groups will be chosen to make five-minute presentations each, with five minutes of questions-and-answers to follow. The group then votes which charity to give its money to that night.

Like the 100 Women (or More) Who Care, the men will meet once every three months; and at the same place where the women’s group meets — the Spring Lake Country Club, 17496 N. Fruitport Road. For more information about joining the men’s group or applying for an award, call Kevin Green, general manager of the Spring Lake Country Club, at 850-1144; or e-mail [email protected].
