Crockery talks millage

A second open house is planned for 1-3 p.m. Saturday, July 26.
Officials say they want to combine two existing millages into one more flexible fund.
Currently, Crockery Township property owners pay three-quarters of a mill each for operations and building/maintenance. That brings in just over $200,000 to the fire department, Dreyer said. That’s about two-thirds of the department’s total budget. The other third comes from the township’s general fund.
Dreyer said in his tenure at the department, he’s worked hard to acquire grants for equipment purchases, as well as organize funds to pay off debts and prepare for the future.
“For the first time in history, we’ll be able to put money away for future equipment purchases,” the chief said.
That means that when it’s time to replace the department’s 26-year-old brush truck or the 19-year-old engine or rescue truck, there will be money on hand.
The new fire station will be paid off this year.
Theresa Ketner was non-committal as she perused the equipment displays on a muggy night at the township fire station. The Apple Avenue resident said she’s “not sure” about supporting the millage renewal, although she’s seen the firefighters in action helping a neighbor with cardiac trouble.
“I’m just checking to see what they are talking about they need,” said the longtime township resident.
John Ruiter said he has no qualms about supporting the township.
