Vonda J. “Mike” Walma, age 82, died July 1, 2018, in Grand Rapids, where she was born August 6, 1935. As a wife and mother of two young boys, Mike moved to Grand Haven in 1968, where she remained a resident for most of the next 50 years.

After joining the Grand Haven Area Public Schools as an elementary teacher, she went on to spend more than 20 years as a school principal — first at Ferry Elementary School, and then at Peach Plains and Robinson elementary schools.

Mike is survived by her two sons, Bob and Curt; and her younger sister, Marcia Heffner. In addition to being a loving mother and sister, Mike will be fondly remembered for many things, including her passionate energy and love for life, her steadfast faith, her dedication to the education of children, and the distinctively determined sound of her footfalls marching up and down the school hallways.

Friends and former colleagues of Mike will be hosting an informal gathering for remembrance on Wednesday, August 15, from 2-4 p.m., in the lounge of the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Haven.
