Sonja Marie Chittenden

Sonja Marie Chittenden, age 79, of Spring Lake, peacefully passed away Friday, August 3, 2018, at Heartwood Lodge Hospice Residence. She was born October 17, 1938, in Grand Haven to Frederick and Lillian (Lange) Frovog. Sonja married William Earl Chittenden on June 21, 1958, in Spring Lake.

Sonja graduated from Spring Lake High School. After her marriage to William, they lived in Japan during his service in the Navy, with their first son, Bill. After returning, they were blessed with two more children, Steve and Kelly, and made Spring Lake their lifelong home. Sonja loved cooking and baking, reading, wintering in Florida, and most of all, spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband William, on June 1, 2016; her parents; her son, Steven Mark Chittenden; granddaughter, Angela Chittenden; three sisters: Sally Bell-Molenkamp, Aleta “Penny” Dornbos, and Maxine Palen.

She is lovingly remembered by her son, William Chittenden of Grand Haven; her daughter, Kelly (Dave) Devoe of Southlake, TX; her granddaughters, Stefanie (Dustin) Brown of Spring Lake, and Brooke and Devaney Devoe of Southlake, TX; her grandson, Jordan Wetterman; her three great-grandchildren: Breslin, Clara, and Lennon; her sister, Beverly (Robert) Stevenson; her brothers-in-law, Rodney Chittenden and Robert Dornbos; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life for family and friends will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, September 4, 2018, at Seven Steps Up (116 S. Jackson St., Spring Lake, MI). A committal service will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Spring Lake Cemetery for those who would like to attend.
