In 1944, he met the girl of his dreams, Virginia (Gynne) L. Resner of Grand Haven. Eight years later, he convinced her to join him in Tripoli, Lybia, North Africa, where he was serving our country at Wheelus Air Force Base during the Korean War. They were married March 1, 1952, and welcomed a daughter, Lynda (Donner) of Kingsley. They left Africa and resumed life in the Tri-Cities, where their family grew with Jack Jr. of Grand Haven, Janet Bosch-Taylor of Spring Lake and Susan (Jim) Vigliotti of The Villages, Florida.
His independence was evident in his varied business endeavors: used car lot in Grand Haven, Brunswick in Muskegon, Stainless Steel Finishers and a blueberry farm in Edmore. They retired to Nevins Lake in Montcalm County, enjoying snowmobiling, fishing and traveling to Alaska, Europe and several cruises. The long Michigan winters sent them to Florida in 1991. They continued to fill their days with golf, cards, sailing, shuffleboard, dancing and friends. Jack was the founding president of the West Michigan Shoreliners Club in The Villages. A lifelong golfer, he got his first hole-in-one at the age 77. Due to health problems, Jack and Gynne returned to Spring Lake in March 2018 to live with their daughter, Janet.
Jack was predeceased by his parents; brother Bill; in-laws Louis and Angela (Rupar) Resner; brothers-in-law Ben MacNeill, Jim deSpelder and Bill Nevills; and sister-in-law Angie deSpelder. He is survived by his wife of 66 years; four children; four grandchildren: Jason (Jenny) and Brian (Kristy) Donner, Angelina Vigliotti and Justin Taylor; and three great-grandchildren: Craig, Lane and Addison Donner, who brought a special sparkle to his eyes. Also surviving are brother Jim and sister Carole Nevills, sister-in-law Anne MacNeill, and several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass with Military Honors will be held Friday, August 17, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 406 E. Savidge St., Spring Lake, with visitation one hour prior.
Memorial contributions can be made to the American Legion Post 28 or Harbor Hospice.
