Paul Rose

Mr. Paul Douglas Rose, age 88, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2019.

He was born in Grand Haven, Michigan, on January 29, 1931 to Myron and Alice (Van Zanten) Rose. He graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1949 and entered the Army on Dec. 2, 1952, during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 3, 1954, attaining the rank of corporal.

Mr. Rose retired from Michigan Bell on Nov. 4, 1983, after 30 years, and worked another 16 years at Robbins Road Hardware. He served on the Grand Haven City Council as Mayor Pro-Tem from 1972-1983, and 3 terms on the Grand Haven Airport board, during which time he got his pilot’s license.

Mr. Rose was a member of Grand Haven Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed wintering in Florida for 20 years. He was a longtime member of the American Legion and loved the Coast Guard and served on the Festival board.

Survivors: Wife of 30 years, Beatrice “Betty” (VandenBrand Szymas) of Grand Haven; son: James Rose; daughter: Christine (Douglas) Bahl; step-children: John (Carol) Szymas, Bette Jo (Ken) Chudy, Julie Johnson, Jeanne (Garry) DeHaan; 3 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; 12 step-grandchildren and 19 step-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his first wife: Maxine; brothers: Howard and Robert; sister: Helen, and son: Mark.
