• Jun 11, 2019 at 12:00 AM

James Irwin Pond, age 93, of Grand Haven (formerly of California) passed away Thursday, June 6, 2019, at a local care facility. He was born November 14, 1925, in Santa Ana, Calif., to the late Chauncey and Huel (Poole) Pond.

Jim graduated from Santa Ana High School, and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy as a medic on the USS Davison during World War II. He was the deputy coroner for Orange County Medical Examiner, as well as deputy sheriff, before retiring and moving to Grand Haven in 2007. Jim attended Trinity Reformed Church in Grand Haven, and was passionate about the welfare of animals and children. He enjoyed bowling, and especially loved boating and sailing. Jim was always proud of the sailboat he built and sailed to Catalina Island, which he later sold to the Wrigley Bros. He also participated in several sailboat races throughout his lifetime, namely the Chicago-Mackinaw Race, which he spoke of often.

Jim will be lovingly remembered and missed by his daughters: Doreen (Bill) Sharp of Grand Haven, Casey Lambert of Grand Haven, Suanne Anderson of Chesterfield, Va., and Allison Pond of Arlington, Va.; and sons, Gary (Linda) Pond of Milwaukee, Wis., and Douglas (Gail) Pond of Reedville, Va. He will also be missed by his loyal canine companion, Buddy.

The Memorial Service for Jim will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2019, at Klaassen Family Funeral Home with Mr. Michael Leak officiating. Full Military Rites to be performed by members of the American Legion, Charles A. Conklin Post 28. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Harbor Humane Society. Please visit www.klaassenfuneralhome.com to sign Jim’s online guestbook.
