Army veteran Michael Stephen Johnson, age 76, passed away unexpectedly and in the presence of loved ones on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at North Ottawa Community Hospital in Grand Haven. He was born January 18, 1943, in Findlay, Ohio, to Vern and Thelma Johnson.

Michael was awarded The Bronze Star Medal for meritorious action in the U.S. Army while serving several consecutive tours during the Vietnam War. A graduate of Western Michigan University with post-graduate accreditation from DePaul University, he was most proud of his time as the executive director of Kandu Industries in Grand Haven. He loved dogs and ice cream, going for scenic car rides (often involving dogs and ice cream), and loved his daughters very much.

Michael is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Rebekah (Steve Leibrandt) Johnson of Norton Shores; step-daughter, Cathleen; and his sister, Marsha (Leo) Bullian of Cascade. He was married to Martha Johnson for 23 years, with whom he remained friendly. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Linda Johnson. Michael was very grateful to the kind staff and residents at Robbinswood Assisted Living, and all the remarkable care providers at the Michigan Department of VA.

A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions to The Salvation Army are appreciated. Arrangements by The VanZantwick Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 620 Washington Ave., Grand Haven, MI 49417. Share memories with the family at their online guest book at www.sytsemafh.com.
