Spring Lake defeats Sparta
The Spring Lake boys soccer team traveled to Sparta and came out victorious Thursday night, winning 3-1 over the Spartans.
Senior Jack Ogden (44:30) got the scoring going early in the first half for the Lakers, but Sparta was able to get one back, scoring to make it 1-1 going into halftime.
In the second half, Spring Lake proved to the better team, pressing Sparta's goal on offense. Senior Charlie Parker scored off a corner kick and the game was sealed with a goal by junior Josh Britton.
Spring Lake moves to 1-1-3 and will play Grand Rapids West Catholic at home next Tuesday at 6:45 p.m.
Fruitport boys fall to Rockford
The Fruitport boys soccer team fell to host Rockford 2-0 in a non-conference battle on the pitch.
The Rams scored once late in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. Rockford followed that up with an early goal in the second half to make it 2-0, holding the Trojans scoreless for the remainder of the match.
Fruitport looked poised to score after the break, but the Rams' defense never let one by. As for the Trojan defense, senior goalie Connor Hines led the Trojans with 12 saves in the net.
"I really thought we did a nice job of staying organized and staying in the game," said Fruitport coach Dan Hazekamp. "Rockford is a phenomenal team and they really play a nice brand of soccer. I was happy how with all our boys, their work rate, and willingness to stay disciplined. We are looking forward to getting into conference play next week and recognize it is going to be a battle every night."
Fruitport moves to 1-2 on the season and will begin O-K Black Conference play next Tuesday when they travel to Jenison.
