WMC

Girls soccer defeats Ludington

Western Michigan Christian girls soccer picked up a key Lakes 8 Conference victory Monday, defeating Ludington 1-0 on the road.

WMC’s lone goal came in the second half on a senior-freshman combination. Senior Anna Sytsema secured the assist with an excellent cross inside the box, where freshman Sydney Betten one-touched it into the back of the net.

“It was great to see the hard play of the defensive group to hold off a very passionate Ludington team,” said head coach David Hulings.

WMC next plays Muskegon Catholic Central on Wednesday, and a win or tie gives it the conference championship.

Baseball dismantles Manistee in doubleheader

The WMC baseball team crushed Manistee twice Monday, earning two Lakes 8 Conference wins.

WMC won the first game 10-0 after Michael Kamps tossed five scoreless innings with nine strikeouts. Jameson Goorman, Nick Moser and Nathan VanderWeide led the offense with two hits apiece.

Game 2 was more of the same for WMC, claiming a 7-1 win. Ben Garretson threw six innings with six strikeouts in the win. Moser led at the plate with two triples and three RBIs.

Spring Lake

Softball enjoys scoring spree in O-K Blue matchup

Spring Lake softball scored early and often Monday in a dominant doubleheader victory over O-K Blue Conference foes Grand Rapids Catholic Central.

The Lakers won Game 1, 11-0, thanks to yet another dominant pitching performance from Leah Vaughan, who tossed a one-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts in six innings.

Molly Poole led the Lakers at the plate with four hits, including a three-run home run and seven RBIs.

Spring Lake was even more dominant in Game 2, defeating Catholic Central 21-1 in just three innings. Avery Flynn threw a one-hitter and gave just one unearned run while striking out five batters.

Alicia Mumby had four hits, while Flynn added three hits and five RBIs including two triples. Molly Poole hit her second home run of the night and added three more RBIs, giving her 10 for the doubleheader.
