Spring Lake girls swim team closes out strong

The Spring Lake girls swimming team pushed themselves to the finish line of the 2018 season Saturday at the Holland Aquatic Center and came away with a 19th-place finish after scoring 34 points at the Division 3 state finals.

East Grand Rapids took home top team honors with 330 points, while Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood finished runners-up with 284 points and Hamilton finished with bronze at 191 points.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomores Eliza Hulverson and Sara Strauss, freshman Leila Kahler and senior Sara Mumby finished ninth overall with a time of 1 minute, 41.11 seconds for the Lakers' highest finish of the day.

The same foursome took on the 400-yard freestyle relay event and took 12th with a time of 3:43.88.

Individually, Kahler finished 24th in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.56 and added a 12th-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:18.14.

Hulverson finished 19th overall in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:17.05 and added a 24th-place finish in the 100 freestyle race with a time of 55.41 seconds.

Mumby closed out her high school career with a top 16 finish in the 50 freestyle race with a time of 25.22 seconds and added a 23rd-place finish in the 100 butterfly race with a time of 1:01.66.

Strauss finished 26th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.52.

The 200-yard medley relay team of senior Louise Vega, Strauss, sophomore Zoe Komar and freshman Avery Flynn finished with a time of one minute, 59.6 seconds to finish 28th as a team.
