Bucs compete at Division 1 state finals

The Grand Haven boys swim and dive team took on the Division 1 state finals Saturday hoping to continue a succesful start from Friday's prelims. 

The 200 freestyle relay led the way with an All-State sixth-place finish as Mark Wilgenburg (22.05), Jackson Hamm (21.63), Michael MacDonald (21.52) and Eli Vandenbrand (21.51) clocked in at 1:26.71, dropping 0.66 seconds from their swim Friday. 

The 200 medley relay followed with a 15th-place finish as Carter Brown, Hamm, Wilgenburg and Vandenbrand clocked in at 1:38.45, good for 15th place overall. 

The Bucs' 400 freestyle relay matched the effort, as Ethan Ball (51.35), Wilgenburg (49.27), MacDonald (48.15) and Vandenbrand (47.08) turned in a time of 3:15.85 to take 15th place. 

Vandebrand led the Bucs individually with a pair of finishes inside the top 16. He kicked off his meet with a 15th-place effort in the 200 freestyle at 1:44.39 and followed it up with a 15th place finish in the 100 freestyle at 48.11.

Wilgenburg broke the trend in his individual swim, finishing 13th overall in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.72. 

All together, Grand Haven finished 18th at the Division 1 meet with 42 points. West Ottawa took top honors with 248 points. Hudsonville took third at 164, Zeeland 12th at 81 and  Rockford 13th at 72.
