The University of Michigan women's track team finished fifth at the Big Ten Championship meet over the weekend, scoring 60 points and recording three event winners.

One of those event winners was former Grand Haven standout Claire Borchers in the 3,000-meter steeplechase event.

Borchers recorded a time of 9:58.36 to fend off reigning conference champion Madeline Strandemo of Minnesota in a tense head-to-head battle down the stretch of the race to claim her first individual Big Ten title.

With her conference championship, Borchers became only the second athlete in school history to win the event, as she joined former NCAA champion and college record-holder Anna Willard (2007) as the only two Wolverine women to ever stand atop the medal podium at the conference championship meet.
