Three blasts for Ships Log writer

Dick Fox/Tribune Ships Log • Jan 27, 2016 at 4:00 PM

This is the final column for the 2015-16 season for our port and for the 14th year of our reporting.

The season closed Jan. 2 with the Wilfred Sykes delivering a load to Meekhof’s D&M Dock on Harbor Island. The first boat was received April 5; it was the tug/barge Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 delivering a cargo for Verplank’s Dock in Ferrysburg.

In total, we received 90 cargos on 15 different boats. The number of cargos was a significant improvement over last season’s 65.

The 15 boats were the Algoway, Algorail, Algosteel, Algomarine, ATB Prentiss Brown/St. Mary’s Conquest, ATB Bradshaw McKee/St. Mary’s Challenger, ATB Olive Moore/Lewis Kuber, Calumet, Michipicoten, ATB Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41, Manistee, Manitowoc, Mississagi, Saginaw, Sam Laud and Wilfred Sykes. (ATB stands for articulated tug/barge combination.)

The most frequent visitors were the ATB Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 and the Wilfred Sykes.

This column would not be possible without the help of all of the people at the docks that keep us posted on the schedules of the boats. They include Paul at Meekhof’s, Jeff at St. Mary’s Cement, Nate at Verplank’s and Mike at the power plant.

Again this year, we have been aided by Sam, a young man who is really interested in the lake boats and provided information when we were unable to do so. Thank you all for your help and cooperation.

Special thanks to the Tribune for publishing the column. Thanks also to all of our readers who have taken the time to tell me you enjoy the column and/or offer suggestions.

This concludes my tenure as the Ships Log columnist. Sam Hankinson will be taking over the column when shipping resumes.

Our current estimate is that activities in our port and this column will resume in late March.
