2-week visitor leaves Grand Haven port Thursday afternoon

The Defiance/Ashtabula finally left the Grand Haven port Thursday, more than a week after making an ice-covered entry on April 7.

The tug/barge combo sat at Verplank’s Coal Dock in Ferrysburg for several days before delivering its load of stone. Ships Log columnist Sam Hankinson reported the ship was having unspecified repairs.

The Defiance/Ashtabula have only visited Grand Haven a handful of times before, as a large portion of the vessels’ career has been spent on salt water, Hankinson reported.

On Thursday, the tug Barbara Andrie entered the Grand Haven pierheads shortly after 2 p.m. and then escorted the Defiance/Ashtabula from port into Lake Michigan in winds out of the northwest.
