$171K added to 2018 resurfacing program

A favorable fund balance is allowing more road work in Grand Haven Township subdivisions this year.

“I’ve put together another 0.7 mile of roads that I’d recommended for resurfacing,” Township Manager Bill Cargo said.

Streets to be resurfaced include Pine Dunes Court from 168th to a cul-de-sac; Majestic Court from Lakeshore Drive east to a cul-de-sac; Reenders Court from Lakeshore Drive east to a cul-de-sac; Mitchell Street from Robbins Road south to its end; and 160th Avenue west to a cul-de-sac.

All of the streets to be resurfaced have a Pavement Surface Evaluation and Rating rating of 5 or less on a 10-point scale.

Cargo noted that because the township’s 2017 financial audit indicated that the fund balance for the township’s General Fund exceeded its minimum, and because the final 2017 street paving costs were under budget, he recommended that five additional streets be added to the 2018 paving list. The Township Board unanimously approved the estimated $171,807 worth of work.

The Township Board previously approved $368,250 for resurfacing eight streets (1.65 miles), in addition to the regraveling program and the major streets that will be resurfaced by the Ottawa County Road Commission.

“The township has about 40 miles of subdivision streets,” Cargo noted. “Since 1987, the Road Commission delegated 100 percent of the costs associated with subdivision resurfacing to the townships.”

For 2018, Grand Haven Township will resurface about 5.9 percent of all subdivision streets in the township.

Other subdivision roads to be resurfaced this year include: Birdsong Lane, River Trail to 148th Avenue; Riverside Trail, Waterview Trail east to a cul-de-sac; Waterview Trail, Riverside Trail to Woodside Trail; Woodside Trail, Waterview Trail to 148th Avenue; Hidden Creek Drive, Ferris Street to Hidden Creek Court; Sandy Woods Drive, Buchanan Street to a cul-de-sac; Chickory Drive, Buchanan Street south to a cul-de-sac; and Juniper Hills Court, Garnsey Drive south to a cul-de-sac.

Grand Haven Township will also regravel about 5.8 miles of roads this year. The township’s 2018 budget appropriated $100,000 for that work.

Roads to be regraveled in 2018 include: Buchanan Street, 160th Avenue to 144th Avenue; 56th Avenue, Buchanan Street to M-45; Winans Street, 152nd Avenue to 144th Avenue; 158th Avenue,  M-45 to U.S. 31; and 168th Avenue from Pierce Street to Fillmore Street and M-45 to Rich Street.
