Five things to watch this week

Duncan MacLean • Apr 15, 2019 at 12:15 AM

While inclement weather threatens to derail the prep calendar for the second straight April, schedules this week are packed with compelling matchups.

From local rivalries to conference clashes, don’t miss these five events.

Boys volleyball conference games

Where: Grand Haven High School

When: Monday, 5 p.m.

If the snow sticks around through high 30-degree temperatures Monday, a night indoors could be a welcome sight for local residents. Luckily, the Grand Haven boys volleyball team is hosting the first night of competition for the vastly expanded Michigan boys volleyball conference Monday.

After taking home the inaugural conference title last season in a league of four teams, the Bucs will host the six Lakeshore division teams Monday, representing half of the now 12-team conference. Grand Haven will play three matches against South Christian at 5 p.m., Mona Shores at 6 p.m. and Reeths-Puffer at 7 p.m.

GH boys golf at home

Where: The Meadows at Grand Valley State University

When: Tuesday, 2:30 p.m.

With the Grand Haven Golf Club under renovation for the season, the Grand Haven boys golf team had to find a new home for the spring. They settled on the Meadows at Grand Valley, where they will host a conference jamboree Tuesday.

The Bucs are navigating their first season under new head coach Taylor Schriber and will have added challenge with potential golf-disrupting weather Tuesday. While precipitation is limited to the morning hours, even small wind gusts can build to blusters in the plains of Allendale.

GH vs. SL girls lacrosse

Where: Spring Lake High School

When: Wednesday, 7 p.m.

The Drawbridge Classic returns Wednesday for a highly anticipated matchup between the Grand Haven and Spring Lake girls lacrosse teams.

This edition of the rivalry has been especially contested in its formative years, as Spring Lake has won all five meetings so far. Only once has the game been decided by more than one point, as the Lakers won the most recent matchup 10-8 on their Senior Night last year.

What more could you ask for?

GH soccer vs. West Ottawa

Where: Grand Haven High School

When: Thursday, 7 p.m.

With thunderstorms in the forecast for Thursday, it is anyone’s guess what will run and what will fall victim to delay. Should Grand Haven girls soccer take the field, it will be must-see action, as they host O-K Red Conference rival West Ottawa.

The game will serve as a revenge opportunity, as the Panthers eliminated Grand Haven from the playoffs in the opening round of the district tournament last season with a 3-0 victory.

Lax Fest

Where: Spring Lake High School

When: Saturday, all day

If Wednesday’s matchup doesn’t satisfy your rivalry appetite, head out to Spring Lake Saturday morning, afternoon, or evening as Grand Haven and the Lakers engage in a non-stop rivalry affair.

The festival features meetings between the Buc and Laker 3rd/4th – grade, 5th/6th – grade, the 7th/8th – grade, junior varsity and varsity teams.

Grand Haven hosted last year, where Spring Lake swept the festival winning all but one game, as the 7th/8th-grade team tied. The Lakers punctuated it with a buzzer-beater win in the varsity game, scoring the game-winning goal with one second left on the clock.
