SPRING LAKE SPLITS AT GODWIN HEIGHTS
The Spring Lake wrestling squad finished 1-1 at the Godwin Heights quad meet Wednesday night.
The Lakers lost to Allendale 71-9 in the opener but bounced back for a 51-27 win over Hopkins.
Jack Parker and Hunter Rose each went 2-0 on the night to lead the Lakers, while Max Montgomery, Connor Montgomery, Caleb Kitchen, Jamie Holt, Schafer Bailey, Sam France and Dylan Henshaw all picked up a single victory.
"The boys got to see what an elite-level team looked like tonight in Allendale,” said Spring Lake head coach Dan Robinson. “They are legit up and down their lineup. I was proud of the way the boys rebounded against Hopkins.
“We are showing we can compete with some teams, but still have a lot to work on. I was really proud of how some guys are really stepping up. We finally got Sam France back in our lineup after being sick and then we lost two other starters to sickness and gave up three weight classes, so the other guys did their job in that second match.
“Once we get through the holiday break, we should be filling all our weights and then it's just about continuing to get better each day. Jack Parker had an excellent night beating two kids who only had one loss between them and Hunter Rose continues to wrestle really well. This upcoming weekend we will continue to test ourselves as we head to Grand Haven and there are some outstanding teams there."
GRAND HAVEN FALLS TO GRANDVILLE
The Grand Haven wrestling team lost to Grandville on Wednesday, 44-22.
Cody Miller scored a major decision (16-4) at his 130-pound weight class to lead the Bucs, while Daniel Guillen added an 11-4 decision at 140; Kaleb Bucher recorded a pinfall win at 189; Bronson Jewell won by pinfall at 215 and Chance Heineman scored an 11-5 decision at 285.
“We gave up too many bonus points to beat a team like Grandville tonight,” said Grand Haven coach Vince Gervais. “We left points off the board. The energy we brought as a team was where it needed to be, but it wasn’t enough to overcome some of our mistakes. We just need to clean a few things up and go back to work tomorrow.”
