“We are not in an ideal situation with our funding,” Grand Haven Public Works Director Derek Gajdos said.
A 1987 graduate of Grand Haven High School has received a Core Fulbright U.S. Scholar award to teach and research in Hungary.
“We want to be a part of the solution — not a part of the problem” City Manager Pat McGinnis said. “Even talking about it is an important step.”
From 23 campers at the first camp 36 years ago, the Camp Sunshine program at Camp Blodgett has grown to a total of 276 campers at four locations.
Many U.S. Coast Guard members said it was “an honor” to be selected for this year’s parade and the Coast Guard Festival is the highlight of the year.
If nobody is at the marked spot, the city could remove the sheets or caution tape.
“This is a great turnout,” said John Boeve, a former puller for the Grand City Skiers.
“This is a good way to get involved in the community and show support for the Coast Guard,” said Maryann Barringer of Kid’s Kourt.
And Scholten was the first award-winner to be called.
“There was a time where rides were just built to thrill the customers, but not anymore,” said Dustin Skerbeck, the operating manager for the carnival going up next week in downtown Grand Haven.
