Family gets tow after boat takes on water

A local tow service was called to bring in the vessel, but the Coast Guard and the Ottawa County Marine Patrol also responded because the boat was taking on water and because the adults did not have life jackets, McKay said.

The boat was already heading back to the pier heads when they radioed for help, McKay said. Bilge pumps in the boat were able to keep it afloat long enough to get the boat to North Shore Marina.

McKay said the Coast Guard “terminates the voyage” of any stopped vessel that does not have enough life jackets.

“We write them up a violation and the hearing officer determines their fine,” he said. “Hopefully, with a situation like this, they might have a better understanding of the importance of life jackets."
