Top 5 things to do this weekend

Mark Brooky • Apr 20, 2017 at 12:00 PM

It will be a glorious weekend to get outside and celebrate spring — as well as Earth Day, chili, blues, books and Handel’s “Messiah.”

(1) Lakeshore Earth Day Celebration — 12:30-6 p.m. Saturday in Grand Haven. It starts with the Green Parade from the Ottawa County Courthouse to the Community Center, 421 Columbus Ave., where the Earth Day Fair runs from 1-4 p.m. with demonstrations, information, food, games and environmentally friendly products. End the day with the Earth Day Rock concert from 3-6 p.m. at the Community Center. Spring Lake District Library will be offering free shredding service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, in honor of Earth Day. It will take place in the Harvest Bible Chapel parking lot, 225 E. Exchange St., Spring Lake.

(2) Chilly Blues Fest — all day Saturday. Snug Harbor, 311 S. Harbor Ave. in Grand Haven, is hosting the annual event. The cookoff is there from 12-3 p.m., with the official tasting starting at 3 p.m. The Snug Harbor deck will play host to Bell’s Brewery Tap Takeover and lots of live blues all weekend.

(3) Sing-in Messiah — 4-5:30 p.m. Sunday at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 524 Washington Ave., Grand Haven. You can help celebrate the Octave of Easter with Handel’s “Messiah.” Bring your score (or RSVP to have one ready for you) and sing along with the choruses of G.F. Handel’s famous oratorio. Professional players and a select chorus will accompany everyone through a commentary on the life of Jesus. The concert is free; donations will go toward the church’s music ministry fund and music endowment.

(4) Local Author Fair — 12-3 p.m. Saturday at Loutit District Library, 407 Columbus Ave., Grand Haven. Many West Michigan authors will be gathered to talk about their books.

(5) World Book Day — 12-4 p.m. Sunday in Grand Haven’s Central Park. Brilliance Publishing will be bringing thousands of books and audiobooks for all ages to give away to celebrate literacy.
