Distracted driver smashes into Allendale-area home, police say

Ottawa Co. Sheriff's Office photoThe driver of this car was apparently using her cellphone and became distracted when she lost control of the vehicle and smashed into an Allendale Township home late Thursday morning, police said.

ALLENDALE TWP. — Police said a woman was using her cellphone when she lost control of her car and it struck a house in Allendale Township shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday.

No one was hurt in the incident, according to Sgt. Brian Buter of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.

The on-scene investigation showed that a 27-year-old Allendale woman was having or had a heated conversation with her boyfriend prior to the crash when she apparently lost control of her car while corresponding with him on her phone. At the time, she was driving south on 68th Avenue, south of Lake Michigan Drive, when her 2007 Pontiac struck a utility box and then continued through a yard and struck the home at 11095 68th Ave.

This incident was related to distracted driving, Buter said, and the driver was cited for careless driving upon the completion of the crash investigation.
