ZEELAND — Ann Huizenga, mother of U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, died on Monday, Aug. 12. She was 88 years old.
Rep. Huizenga tweeted on Tuesday saying is mother “was a strong & determined woman who fought through difficulties growing up in depression-era Flint.” The representative said his mother loved music, dance, art, travel and, most of all, her family.
“Our family is saddened at the loss of our mother and grandmother, Ann who went to be w our Lord on Monday.”
Rep. Bill Huizenga sent the following tweet: “Mom was a strong & determined woman who fought through difficulties growing up in Depression-era Flint MI. She loved music, dance, art, & travel but most of all her family.”
Ann shared her love of music and dance through her work, beginning a career in Chicago at Arthur Murray Dance Studios. She later taught ballroom dancing at Holland and Zeeland Community Education and later operated Dance Today with daughter Andrea.
Ann Huizenga was preceded in death by husband Gerald in 2016 and several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by children James (Liza) Barry, Andrea Barry, Bill (Natalie Huizenga) and Nancy (Reggie) Kapteyn, several grandchildren, a great-grandchild, sister Helen Geiger, brothers and sisters-in-law Margaret and Jerry Sytsma, Roger Rietberg, William and Judy Huizenga and Almira Huizenga.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, at Yntema Funeral Home, 251 S. State St., Zeeland. A funeral will be at noon Saturday at Haven Christian Reformed Church, 541 Alice St., Zeeland.
