The commander of Coast Guard Sector Field Office Grand Haven always faces a wide range of challenges, but Lt. Brian Howard has faced more than his share of adversity during his time in charge.

The 2019 government shutdown that halted paychecks going out to U.S. Coast Guard personnel, record high Great Lakes water levels and the COVID-19 pandemic have all been under his watch.
