train semi crash

A tow truck was in place to move the semi-truck away from the tracks.

Nobody was injured when a passenger train struck a semi-truck that turned into its path early Monday morning near Zeeland.

Emergency crews responded to Chicago Drive near 64th Avenue in Zeeland Township shortly after 6:30 a.m.

The investigation revealed that a semi driven by a 58-year-old man was delivering equipment to a farm at 6215 Chicago Drive, said Sgt. Matt Wildfong of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office. The truck turned into the farm and was crossing the railroad crossing when the Amtrak train struck the trailer and spun the vehicle into the yard.

Neither the truck driver nor the 49 people aboard the train were injured, Wildfong said.

The train experienced mechanical issues as a result of the crash. Wildfong said the train would remain at the scene until it could be moved.
