The ash in the air felt “like light snow” and the smoke was heavy. As fires in California blazed around the Eastern Sierra Mountains, Jean Reynolds of Grand Haven and Kathy Schipper of Spring Lake watched from a Blackhawk helicopter as the area went up in smoke.

For the duo, it’s just another page in their book of adventures.
