A University of Michigan study has found that Michigan, out of all the Great Lakes states, has some of the least support for ports and the maritime industry.

The “Tools to Compete” study ranks Michigan as “weak” in three of five categories: dedicated state-level grant program for ports, economic development department grants, loan programs, technical assistance, and tax and bond authority. Only Indiana ranks lower, with “weak” evaluations in four of the five categories.
