The wacky awareness builder has both teams trade sticks and rulebooks for 50 minutes of crossover competition. The boys must wield the girls’ shallow-pocket sticks and refrain from contact, while the girls gain the cradling power of the boys’ sticks and free rein to rough up their opponents to their heart’s content.
After the boys took the first two meetings, the girls were eager for a win this year. The boys managed to control the first half, taking a 4-2 lead into halftime before the girls realized their full power.
In the second half, possession came easier for the girls while the defense intensified. Light checks were replaced with full swings and timid drives were replaced with bull dodges and aggressive spins.
With seven minutes to go, the girls scored the equalizer to tie the game 7-7. The final minutes were a triumph of defense as neither team could find a good look at the net.
In a move of strategic genius, the girls team employed a bum-rush offense to score the final goal, sending their entire sideline onto the field for a 30-on-10 attack. The tidal wave was effective, as a swarm of defenders stripped the ball from a charging boy and took it to the net for a power-play goal.
On the following possession, chaos ensued as the boys stormed the field for an en masse hidden ball trick. The chicanery was foiled by a spectacular save by the girls goalie, ending the game with a clear.
At the end of the day, both coaches were pleased with no injuries to report ahead of their respective district tournament runs next week, and with work done to support the Bucs Pride cause.
