FERRYSBURG — The Tri-Cities area will once again host several Division I college athletic teams when the 23rd annual Don Lubbers Cup Regatta rows April 13-15 on Spring Lake.

Teams will start warming up that Friday and competition is planned for 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Grand Valley State University club rowers will compete against Michigan State University, University of Michigan, University of Illinois, Notre Dame, Case Western Reserve University, Ohio State University, Drake University, University of Minnesota and Purdue University.

Nine men’s teams and six women’s teams will compete for trophies in four- and eight-seat rowing shells. The men’s team with the most points overall will win the Don Lubbers Plaque, while the women’s team will win the Nancy Lubbers Plaque. The Spring Lake Yacht Club Trophy is awarded to the team with the most points for combined men’s and women’s teams.

“The regatta gives Midwest universities an opportunity to see their competition early in the season,” said John Bancheri, head coach of the GVSU Rowing Club. “The intense competition enhances the development of our crews for national championship level competition later in the spring.”

The regatta is based at the Spring Lake Yacht Club in Ferrysburg. This is located in the middle of the race course and has the best viewing. There are also concessions and restrooms on site.

There is no public parking at the yacht club, but shuttles will run continuously from Johnston Boiler and Keenan Marina in Ferrysburg. It’s about 1.25 to 1.5 miles if you are walking from these parking areas.

“The Lubbers Cup Regatta is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our community to athletes and families from across the Midwest,” said Joy Gaasch, president of The Chamber of Commerce Grand Haven-Spring Lake-Ferrysburg. “This year, we are excited to display local businesses and organizations with the help of Hello West Michigan. Hosting over 500 athletes, the Lubbers Cup is a fantastic way to help college students discover career options in the West Michigan region.”
