The team fielded a team of 20 athletes for the state championship weekend, including rowers from Spring Lake and Grand Haven High Schools.
Both the boys and girls varsity four boats made the finals, finishing fifth overall. The girls’ boat consisted of Emma Boerson (Grand Haven) in stroke position, Louise Vega (SL), Gabryella Cameron (GH), Lily Claire Winter (SL) and Alex Reed at coxswain.
The boys’ boat was rowed by Daniel Winter (SL) in stroke, Tyler Harms (GH), Eric Geschiere (SL), Corbyn Terpstra (SL) and Tori Aero (SL) coxing.
The team is coached by head coach Jeff Pipp, who was a four-year rower at Michigan State. Mandy Boerson assists coaching the novice boats after a four-year rowing career at GVSU and Paul Winter serves as the director of rowing.
In its third full year, the team participated in three sprint regattas of 1,500 meters over the Spring while practicing five days a week. In the fall, the club rows Head races, which are longer endurance races, concluding their season at the Grand Rapids Fall Classic. Last fall, Spring Lake placed third or better in four races, including a gold medal in the boys junior four.
After leading the boys’ varsity four boat to their fifth-place finish, senior Daniel Winter will continue his rowing career at one of the premier club programs in the region as he signed his Letter of Intent to row for Grand Valley State University in the fall. Daniel Winter was a captain for Spring Lake, alongside Emma Boerson, and one of the last remaining members of the original Spring Lake team.
The team recently kicked off a middle school program and is looking for more rowers in the fall. No experience is required or expected for new rowers. Information can be found at springlakerowing.com or by emailing [email protected]
