KALAMAZOO — There’s a specific memory in the mind of 77-year-old Don Zomer from his days watching a wiry 6-foot-2, 150-pound shortstop patrol the infield at Kalamazoo Central in the early 1990s.

Though he was far from the burliest athlete on Zomer’s Maroon Giants squad, this particular shortstop had an arm unlike any he had seen, forcing the coach to make a change in his infield.
