Walls normally burdened with baits are almost bare at tackle shops throughout West Michigan.

An increasing number of Michiganders have been fishing this summer – but while licenses are abundant, supplies are not.

According to data from Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources, July hit a five-year high for fishing license sales at 978,206, a 9 percent increase over last year’s sub-900,000 license sales.

Racks normally bristling with fishing rods now sit nearly empty as local bait shops are having a hard time getting enough inventory to fill their shelves.
