The Saugatuck Township Planning Commission gave its blessing Monday night of the development after a four-hour meeting in which 15 people spoke out against it.
SAUGATUCK TWP. — About 150 people attended a public hearing Tuesday hosted by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to gather comments on a boat basin with a surrounding road that are included in the NorthShores of Saugatuck development.
“The whole area — which they call the Wild Heart of Saugatuck — is very dear to my family’s heart. There’s so much history there … and to just cut a piece of that land out, to me, is unthinkable — sacrilegious, almost.”
SAUGATUCK TWP. — Beyond a supervised gate is a winding road that leads to fairly empty land, with the only human-made structure of note being an expansive boat-shaped mansion just off the coast of Lake Michigan.
For 100 years, 400 acres of dunes along the Kalamazoo River and Lake Michigan have escaped the region’s trend toward development, and remained relatively untouched except for the construction of one home at the river mouth and the defunct Broward Yacht factory.
